iConStruct

The first thing you need to know about Roger Meier’s iConStruct is that it is meant for programmers, developers, and any other user who needs to create icons. And so we get to the next thing you need to know about iConStruct – this is a properly good tool you can use to create icons. Load an image into iConStruct and soon after you will have an icon.

iConStruct is available for multiple platforms, mainly Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. To get the application up and running on a Windows-powered machine, you will not have to go through any installation process. All you have to do is download an archive and run the executable inside. Of course, this makes iConStruct a portable application. Feel free to put it on a USB stick, for example, and take it with you.

On the right hand side of the application’s interface you will see a preview for the icon you’re working on. The image file or picture object you loaded, in different sizes, as well as several editing options are presented to the left. In the upper right hand corner, right were you would expect it to be, there’s a traditional File Menu.

As mentioned above, iConStruct is a tool you can use to create icons. To better put things in perspective, here’s a quick look at its main features: automatically scales pics to standard icon sizes, automatically generates makes, individually copy masks and icons into other applications, play with multiple parameters (mask threshold, mask edge width, edge brightness, fill holes in the mask, use nearest neighbor scaling, scale proportionally).
